Healthcare for the Homeless Houston’s HOMES Clinic 2023 Spring Health Fair

It was thanks to the efforts of our dedicated volunteers & incredible community partners that we had such a successful Health Fair on Sunday, May 28. With the help of 58 volunteers, we were able to assist 30 people in accessing valuable health services and social resources.

Our Health Fair was hosted at our location in Cathedral Clinic, and patrons were recruited from The Beacon next door. Upon entry, all patrons were individually assigned a volunteer to guide them through the booths at the fair. Each guide screened each patron, determining their specific needs to be addressed that day. If it was necessary for the patron to see a medical professional, the guide would place the patron in one of our patient rooms to be seen. If the patron could move on to the booths at our fair, the guide would lead them there instead. Booths available included:

  • vision screenings: adminster eye exams, distribute reading glasses, & refer to optometrists nearby for follow-up

  • SkinTalks: distribute skincare like Vaseline & sunscreen & spread awareness about common dermatologic conditions

  • NaloxOWN: raise awareness about opioid overdose, distribute naloxone, & spread information about upcoming training sessions

  • UHCOP: conduct medication reconciliation & prepare refills

  • HOMES Clinic Social Resources Guide: provide information on resources available in Houston, from dental care to clothing

  • community organizations

Once the patron had visited the necessary booths, they were able to pick out a HOMES Clinic care package with essentials like socks, first-aid kits & menstrual pads before returning to The Beacon for lunch. We are so grateful to all who made this event possible, and we can’t wait for the next one!
