Health, Hope, and Haircuts: Reflections from the November Health Fair
On the morning of November 24th, the doors of the HOMES Clinic opened to welcome over 50 Houstonians seeking support, connection, and care. For many, this event was more than a health fair—it was a lifeline. It was a space where the community came together to provide essential resources for neighbors navigating challenging circumstances.
This year’s health fair was thoughtfully designed with a clear mission: to go beyond the conventional boundaries of health care by addressing both immediate needs and the long-term challenges faced by those experiencing housing insecurity. Our goal was to foster a welcoming environment while offering services ranging from hygiene kits to fresh haircuts.
One of the standout features of the event was led by Dr. A, a podiatrist and physician leader at HOMES.. Participants received foot exams and, in many cases, a brand-new pair of shoes. Those who opted to skip the exam were invited to choose from a room filled with gently used and new shoes donated by faculty, staff, students, and community members from three Houston medical schools: the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine, McGovern Medical School, and Baylor College of Medicine.
One woman, overcome with emotion, found a pair of New Balance shoes that fit her perfectly. With tears in her eyes, she exclaimed, “Thank you.” She explained how, after years of calling Houston’s streets home, her worn-out shoes had made every step agonizing. For her, this small act of kindness was life-changing.
Another highlight was the presence of two local barbers who provided haircuts to over 40 participants. Watching individuals walk in and later leave with a renewed sense of confidence was inspiring. One participant exclaimed, “I feel like a new man.” His smile beamed from ear to ear.
Representatives from Harris County were in attendance, offering information on housing resources and assistance programs. Students from McGovern Medical School’s Block the Blaze organization educated participants on the importance of sunscreen and skin cancer prevention. The Montrose Center provided resources on STI testing and mental health services, while Baylor students offered training on Naloxone administration, empowering participants to respond to overdose emergencies.
The Health Fair Committee also prepared goodie bags for every participant. These included hats, socks, toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and other hygiene products. In total, we served a record-breaking 59 individuals.
Reflecting on the planning and execution of this event, I am in awe of the leadership and teamwork displayed by my fellow medical students. Each leader struck the perfect balance between providing structure and fostering independence, allowing us to leverage one another’s strengths. Together, we prepared the packages and coordinated efforts to ensure the event’s success.
This achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering dedication of our volunteers and community partners. We are deeply grateful to the students from the Fertitta Family College of Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine, and McGovern Medical School, whose hard work and compassion made the event possible. A heartfelt thank you also goes to the local businesses and organizations that generously contributed supplies, services, and time. Your support forms the foundation of this event and enables us to make a meaningful impact.
Looking back, the fall health fair was a powerful reminder of the importance of human connection. The gratitude on the faces of those we served and the sense of relief as they received medical care and essential supplies highlighted the deep need for these services. It was a day that united our community, showing that even in the face of adversity, compassion can create lasting change.
As we look ahead to the spring health fair, we are filled with hope and anticipation. Building on the success of this event, we aim to expand our services, reach even more individuals, and continue to provide critical resources to our unhoused neighbors. We are excited to collaborate once again with volunteers, donors, and community partners to make the spring fair even more impactful. Together, we will continue to bring health, hope, and healing to those who need it most—one life at a time.
